EC, Ayariga failed to file statements

Counsel for Hassan Ayariga, the flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), on Monday, October 31 had to file a draft statement of case after failure to file the statement proper last Friday.

Lawyer Maxwell Logan is reported to have filed the draft due to ill-health. The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), on the other hand, failed to file last Friday with the pretext that it has numerous court cases on its hands.

The two parties had been ordered by the judge, Barbara Tetteh-Charway, last Wednesday, the first day of hearing, to file their statements of case by Friday, October 28 for oral submissions on Monday.

The EC only filed its statement Monday morning, TV3’s Selorm Amenyah reported.

The judge has, therefore, asked for time to study the statements for a date to be set for judgement. The Accra High Court judge said if there are clarifications to be made, Tuesday, November 1 will be set for that ahead of judgement.

Meanwhile, Mr Ayariga expressed optimism of winning the case against the EC.

He argues that he has a better case than the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), which had its flagbearer’s disqualification overturned last Friday.

There were some supporters of the APC singing and dancing at the court.

Some were holding placards with messages of support for their party’s founder and leader.

‘NDC and NPP are not above the law’ one placard read.
