EC advised to secure funds for procurement of more cameras

Kumasi, February 29, GNA – A Business Executive, has advised the Electoral Commission (EC), to explore all avenues to secure funds for procurement of more cameras to enable eligible Ghanaian voters have their pictures taken on the same day that they would register as voters. Mr Opoku-Agyemang Prempeh, Managing Director of Lakayana Company, a Construction and Engineering consortium, said alternatively, the EC could borrow similar cameras from friendly countries to add up to the number of cameras currently at its disposal.

This, he said would facilitate the taking of pictures and issuance of voters identification cards and the registration of voters. Mr Prempeh gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Saturday on the significance and impact of the forthcoming voters registration exercise on the country’s democracy. He observed: “registering as an eligible voter only and to tell him or her to come back another day for pictures to be taken, could be cumbersome and likely to put some people off “.

Mr Prempeh noted that democracy was expensive and people should be well educated on democratic practices to enable them to appreciate good governance.

He appealed to the government to set aside a special fund for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to enable it educate Ghanaians about the significance of the voters registration exercise. Mr Prempeh advised aliens not to meddle in the political affairs of Ghanaians and not to register as voters.
