Ebola Scare: Chief demoted for celebrating annual festival

The Chief of Esiama in the Ellembelle District, Nana Kofi Ampoe IV, has been leading his people to celebrate the annual Kundum festival.

Nana Kofi Ampoe IV, who was initially a Divisional Chief is now serving as an Odikro, a title lower than his earlier status.

The demotion letter, which was signed by, and served under the directive of the President of the Council Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III, stated that the chief flouted the directives in a resolution passed on September 9, 2014, restraining any town within the traditional area from celebrating festivals or holding such huge public gatherings that could expose people to the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

Meanwhile, a report by the Ghana News Agency indicated that the festival for which Nana Kofi Ampoe IV has been sanctioned was also attended by some of the other paramount chiefs under the council who were also signatories to the consensus.
