Eastern Region records 80 maternal deaths

Sisiamang Yiti (ER), Oct. 25, GNA- Dr. Ebenezer Appiah- Denkyira, the Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, on Wednesday announced that the region recorded 80 maternal deaths from January to June this year as against 57 during the same period last year. He also said 170 children below five years old died within that period as against 301 last year and malaria and HIV/AIDS accounted for a high out patient department attendance in the region. Dr. Appiah- Denkyira said these in an address read on his behalf at the inauguration of a community health planning service facility and nurse’s quarters at Sisiamang Yiti, in the Manya Krobo District. Plan Ghana, a non-governmental organisation and the Canadian International Development Agency jointly funded the project with assistance from the Ghana Health Services, while the community provided land and labour. Mr. Samuel Paulos, Country Director, Plan Ghana, said the facility was put in place to 10,500 people in the area. Mr Kwadwo Affram Asiedu, Eastern Regional Minister asked the Ghana Health Service to post qualified health personnel to the Sisiamang Yiti to ensure quality health delivery for the people. He also called on health personnel in the region to work hard to prevent child mortality, maternal mortality and the spread of HIV/AIDS.
