East Gonja District adopts measures to prepare Salaga for tourists

Salaga (N/R), July 3, GNA – Mr. Alhassan Mumuni, the District Chief Executive for the East Gonja, has said he, in consultation with the assembly, had adopted pragmatic measures that would improve sanitation in the town in preparation towards this year’s Emancipation Day celebration.

The measures include fencing of all designated sanitary sites in Salaga, evacuation of all refuse heaps in major communities, dislodging choked public latrines and had set aside the last Saturday of every month as Sanitation Week.

Mr. Mumuni said this in Salaga on Thursday during the first ordinary meeting of the assembly.

He said sanitation was one of the major problems facing the district because the public latrines in most communities had collapsed while sanitary sites had been encroached upon and this had created an avenue for people to dump refuse anywhere. Mr Mumuni appealed to all residents to cooperate with the assembly to ensure that the district is clean to attract tourists to increase the revenue base of the assembly.

On revenue mobilization, he deplored the attitude of some revenue collators who pocket revenue money and that his administration would deal ruthlessly with the practice to enhance development. He said the district had initiated a lot of development projects and that with the collaboration of all in the district those projects would be completed on time.

Mr. Mumuni said the remaining portion of the Tamale/Salaga road would start this year and expressed the hope that the Salaga/Makango road would also be constructed to facilitate movement of goods from the eastern corridor through Makango to Yeji. He said measures had also been put in place to modify the operation of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) to bring sanity into their operation. Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakari Dey, MP for the Salaga, pledged to use 50 per cent of his share of the MPs common fund to fund education in the district and asked needy students irrespective of their political affiliation to apply for the fund.
