E/R floods: 2,600 affected

About 2,650 individuals fell victim to the torrential rains in the Eastern Region over the weekend, the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed.

According to the regional Coordinator Ransford Owusu Boakye, they “have about 150 houses being affected, with a total number of about 2,650 victims, out of which about 600 are very vulnerable and those are the ones we are going to attend to”.

The heavy rains left two people dead and several properties destroyed in the regional capital, Koforidua, as well as in other communities including Akyem Nkronso.

The regional disaster management team is to initiate decisions including the dredging of drains and the pulling down of structures that obstruct free flow of water.

Mr Boakye explained on Tuesday September 27 that relief items would be given to the most vulnerable victims of the floods. “We have not had any building collapse for now, but items were destroyed. We have some items ready for distribution and by close of the day, it should go to the victims,” he told Citi FM in an interview.
