Speed Medical Centre, a private hospital has organised a free medical screening exercise for staff and intellectually disabled students of Dzorwulu Special School.
The exercise, in collaboration with Blooming Africa and Chale forms part of the hospital’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
Gifty-Nancy Hoegah, the Administrator Speed Medical Centre in an interview with the press said this was their little way of reaching out to people and saying thank you to the society.
She said students of Dzorwulu Special School are children who are mostly neglected by the society and their families and as such feels it was necessary they are taken care of properly health wise.
Dr Edem Atabudzi, Medical Doctor, Speed Medical Centre said the children together with the staff were screened on their sugar level, weight and height check ups, urine test, and temperature checks to know if they are healthy.
Madam Hoegah urged parents of such children to know that their children are special who need much attention and appealed to them to give such children the tender love they deserve to remain functional.
“Give such children tender loving care that is all they need and deserve”.
Mrs Veronica Sackey, the Headmistress Dzorwulu Special School commended the Hospital for the gesture, saying: “This is the first time an institution has come to screen inmate of the school.”
She said most of the students have a problem with their sight, which is affecting their mobility hence the exercise would help greatly.
She also urged parents to make the welfare of such children their top most priority because some of the children are very good and have high IQ.
Dzorwulu Special School was established in 1970 by some concerned individuals who felt the need to put these children in a safe environment rather than having them loiter about.
The school in 1974 had an increase in enrolment but due to lack of funds to pay staff was handed over to the Ghana Education Service and it has been so till date.
The School aside government support also gets aid from individuals and institutions to help in operations.
