Akim Manso (E/R), April 3, GNA – The Drivers’ Vehicles and Licensing Authority (DVLA) in the Birim Central municipality, on Thursday organised a programme at Akim Manso to educate handlers of commercial vehicles on safe driving.
Interacting with the drivers here, Mr. Eugene Tawiah, Municipal Director of DVLA, stated that a good driver must have knowledge on the rules and regulations governing road usage. Mr. Tawiah explained that a good driver was one who had the ability to interpret the various road signs. He explained further that it was worthy of a good driver to have enough information relevant to the environment in which he operated. Mr. Tawiah said it was only when drivers followed laid down principles relating to their profession that they could avoid accidents.
He advised: “You are not using the road alone, but sharing it with others whose speed are sometimes faster or slower than yours and this situation needs extra carefulness”. The Municipal Director pointed out, “the road, the vehicle and the driver were the three main constituents of road accidents.” He noted that human error was the major factor of accidents in recent times.
Mr. Tawiah therefore, cautioned drivers to be observant in order to react positively to mistakes committed by other road users, especially cyclists, pedestrians and even animals who suddenly and unexpectedly moved onto the roads.
A good driver, according to Mr. Tawiah, was one who exercised his judgement judiciously, while behind the steering wheel, to avert any eventuality that could cause the lives of passengers. The management and drivers of the Akim Manso branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), expressed gratitude to the Director and the DVLA for educating them on the importance of being abreast with the various road signs and the need to be a good driver.
