Chief Superintendent David Eklu says the police are yet to apprehend anyone in connection with the murder of a Dutch national last week in Tema.
This comes three days after the police told Accra-based Joy Fm that they have received very useful information that could lead to the arrest of the four armed robbers who committed the crime.
Afke Kuipers, a 25-year-old Dutch national volunteering with a local NGO, was shot by armed robbers on Friday afternoon in Tema in broad daylight.
The Ashaiman Police Divisional Commander in an interview with GhanaWeb on Thursday said: “We have some leads that we are following but I cannot for now be very certain that we are getting too close.”
He said the police have ruled out suggestions of contract killings, adding that “the ladies were returning from Ada and they were seven in a Caravan car. They were accosted when getting to their house and the lady who was shot, I understand, had some money in her bag and would not let go – that is why she was shot”.
Supt. Eklu said the use of motorbikes for robbery in the Ashaima area has become common in recent times, therefore the police was treating the incident as a robbery case.
“The use of motorbikes for robbery in this area is high and we have put in place arrangements to reduce these robberies… the situation in Ashaiman is different, we have recorded an increase in the use of unregistered motorbikes and we are working seriously on it,” the police officer said.
He explained it was important that expatriates who came to the country check with the police for the necessary protection.
“We are looking at how we can collaborate with organisations that bring foreign nationals to this country and what we can do to protect them,” Supt. Eklu added.
Meanwhile, Chief Superintendent David Eklu has advised foreigners who come into the country to conduct business to first report to the police.
