‘Dumsor’ about to end – PURC

Contrary to the Power Minister’s warning, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is assuring consumers of stable power supply as the emergency Karpowership is set to start the generation of electricity.

The Power Minister, Dr. Kwabena Donkor told Ghanaians over the weekend that they need to manage their expectations since the power barge is just one of many measures being adopted to solve the energy crises in the long term.

But the External Affairs Manager of the PURC, Nana Yaa Gyantuah told Starr News, the load shedding exercise will end soon.

“We should be happy that load shedding is about to end, that this power barge will certainly bring some minimization in load shedding.

“…It about to end because this (barge) is bringing 225 megawatts and in a typical loading exercise, only about 300 megawatts is shed so this should make up for the shortfall,” she explained.

The Power barge docked at the Tema Harbor Saturday evening, and at a welcoming ceremony on Sunday, Dr. Donkor said the ship, which is about the size of a football pitch and the height of a three-storey building, will ease the load shedding.

“Let me say that the arrival of this barge will not solve all our problems,” Dr. Donkor, who has promised to end what has now become known as ‘dumsor’ by the close of 2015, told a gathering.

“It will make a contribution. As we speak the 250MW power project at Aboadze is also proceeding, and indeed that is even bigger than the Karpowership… the KTPP Plant 220 MW is also at completion stage and TICO 120MW steam expansion has been completed. TAPCO has gone through the full combined cycle, and a lot is happening in the sector. We do ourselves and Ghana a disservice when we focus only on the power barge,” he added.
