Du-West JHS needs electricity to improve academic work

Du-West (UW), July 13, GNA – Du-West Junior High School (JHS) located in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region is in need of electricity to enhance academic work. The school, established in 1977, has been providing basic education to about six communities including Gumo, Peplime, Niator, Wasai, Lulo and Du-West, where the school is situated. Despite, facing infrastructural challenges such as inadequate classroom blocks, teachers’ accommodation, library and electricity, the school is still regarded as one of the best performing basic schools in the district.

Mr Chakurah Osman, Headmaster of the school, who told the Ghana News Agency during an interaction on Tuesday, said electricity was the major challenge confronting the school for now. He pointed out that the lack of electricity had made it impossible for the teaching of ICT in the school as students could not learn the subject practically with computers.

He said the teachers, who sacrificed a lot to stay and teach at the very deprived schools, would love to give out their best even at night if the school was connected to the national grid. Mr Osman said the hard working students, who constantly resort to lantern at night to study would see electricity as a motivating factor to learn more to improve on their academic performance. The headmaster also complained about the bad nature of the roads linking other five neighbouring villages making it impossible for students to attend school regularly during rainy seasons. He, therefore, appealed to government through the Sissala West District Assembly, to come to their aid with electricity and also rehabilitate their roads to bring about a change in the school. Mr Osman said it would also go a long way to improve on the living conditions of the people in those six communities. 13 July 10
