Drunk driver in fatal accident, woman injured

Accra, Sept. 27, GNA – A highly intoxicated driver early Saturday morning knocked down a pedestrian at Apapa, a suburb of Accra and in an attempt to get away, run into an electricity and telephone poles, which fell on a 44 year old woman.

The woman, Mrs. Stella Amoah, unconscious with injuries was rushed together with the driver, Kofi Ambrose Adeh, who is a 32 year-old house help to the Police Hospital.

The area and it surroundings have been plunged into blackout following the collapse of the electricity pole.

An eyewitness, Mr Thomas Mensah Sowah, who took the victims to the hospital, told the GNA that, the car was from the direction of the Labone Coffee Bar road towards the Apapa “trotro” station at top speed with another car pursuing when it ran into the poles.

“Immediately we all rushed to the scene and saved the woman who at that time had fallen unconscious and we rushed her to the Police Hospital,” he said.

Mr Mensah said according to the driver of the car following Kofi Adeh, he (Kofi) had knocked down a gentleman about 400 meters from the station and had refused to stop.

At the Police Hospital, Dr Kojo Benyah, Senior Medical Officer on Duty told the GNA that Mrs Amoah suffered multiple lacerations on her face and body and had a fracture on her right arm and shoulder bone.

“The driver who is totally drunk, smelling all over, suffered minor injuries and is responding to treatment,” he said.

Mrs Amoah who could hardly talk because of the severe pain, managed to tell GNA, “I don’t know what happened. Ask those who brought me. I was on my way to town”.

However, Kofi said, “It is just an accident. Accidents always happen”.
