Drug trafficking workshop held at Tarkwa

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the Germany Embassy, has organized a 3-day training workshop for ten youth leaders in the Tarkwa Nsueam Assembly

The workshop which was on the dangers of drug use and trafficking, saw participants including those from disabled groups, Muslim and Christian societies in the Municipality, being taken through various topics on the effects of drugs on the youth .

Mr. Imrana Mohammed, Coordinator for the Programme and the Principal Civic Education officer at NCCE, told the Ghana News Agency that the training on the theme “own your future” would be held in twenty communities across the country.

He said in the Western Region, Tarkwa and Enchi are the beneficiary communities for the training.

Mr. Alphonsus Arthur, Deputy Western Regional Director of NCCE, said the main purpose of the programme is to equip youth leaders to enable them educate their respective groups on the need to abstain from the dangers of drug use.

He appealed to the participants to listen attentively to what they will be taught to reduce the increasing rate of drug trafficking among the youth.

Mr. Francis Kofi Torkornoo, a director at the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), said the NCCE and NACOB have come together to serve as resource persons for the programme.

He said though the year has not ended, NACOB has recorded about 3,000 drug related cases from four health institutions as against 1,400 for last year.

Mr. Torkornu said those in their productive age are dominating in drug related cases, adding that the training has come at an appropriate time fight the menace.
