Winneba, (C/R) Oct 12, GNA – The leadership of unionised taxi drivers in Winneba and that of motor traffic police would meet, on Sunday, to resolve the issues that led to the suspension taxi services, on Monday, for eight hours.
This decision was made at an emergency meeting between the drivers, who are members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, the Effutu Municipal Executive, Nii Ephraim and the officials of the MTTU, on Monday.
Addressing the meeting, Nii Ephraim condemned the action of the drivers and described it “as uncalled for, a breach of peace and threat to security.”
He was not happy that the drivers did not inform the Assembly, the highest political authority in the area, and his office, before blocking the government’s roads.
The Effutu Municipal Commander of the MTTU, Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Emmanuel Nana Ofori, said the police are not enemies of the drivers but their actions are to ensure sanity in the transportation system.
Nana Obosu, Chief of Ateitu, and Chairman of the Winneba Branch of the GPRTU, urged the taxi drivers and the MTTU officials to cool tempers down while efforts were made to address their understanding. On Monday, taxi drivers in Winneba suspended their operations in protest against what they described as “harassment and extortion of money by the officials of the MTTU in Winneba.”
