Driver’s mate held over one wrap of Indian hemp

A teenager has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi circuit court for possessing one wrap of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, also known as “Wee”.

The plea of Mamuda Shamuda, 19, was not taken as the substance has been sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination.

He will reappear on April 27.

Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court, presided over by Mrs Afia Adu-Amankwaah, that on March 29 this year, at about 1400 hours, Shamuda, dressed in military shorts, was spotted by some Prison Service personnel near the Krofrom Traffic Light.

He immediately took to his heels when he noticed he had been found but with the help of police details at the traffic light, he was arrested.

A search in his pocket revealed the one wrap of the dried leaves suspected to be “Wee”.

He was then, together with the exhibit, handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service, where he was processed and put before the court.
