Driver’s mate bags 20 years for defiling mentally-retarded

A 31-year-old driver’s mate who defiled a 14-year-old mentally-retarded girl, has been ordered by the Kumasi-based Gender Violence Court to spend the next 20 years of his lifetime in prison.

Akwasi Kumi confessed to the crime.

Police Chief Inspector Philip Yao Bebli, told the Court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman-Budu that the victim lives with her brother at Atonsu-Agogo in Kumasi.

The convict on April 8, at about 1930 hours, saw the victim at the Atonsu Presbyterian Basic School and baited her to follow him to an uncompleted building where he had sex with her.

He sent her away after the act and the girl had to spend the night loitering outside because she could not find her way back home.

All this while, the brother and other members of the family were looking for her with heightened anxiety because of her condition.

She was found, the next day under a tree at Atonsu S-Line, and upon interrogating, she narrated her ordeal to them and a report was made to the police.

A Police medical form was issued for the victim to be sent to the hospital and doctors who attended to her in a signed report confirmed that her hymen had been broken.

Investigation led to the arrest of Kumi who admitted having defiled the girl.
