Kumasi, Oct. 23, GNA- Drivers in the country have expressed grave concern about the number of police snap checkpoints on the country’s highways.
In a petition to the Commander of the MTTU of the Ghana Police Service, Mr Sumaila Boakye, Chairman of the Drivers’ Welfare Union of the GPRTU, said the situation was not only causing grave concern to the drivers but also leading to the promotion of indiscipline and disrespect for the officers of the MTTU.
He said the numerous police snap check points at different locations and times on the various highways linking Kumasi to other regions and were uncalled for, and described them as horrifying.
Mr Boakye said most drivers had reported the loss of their driving licenses, which were seized by the police at checkpoints and said their replacements often became a problem.
He suggested the reduction of the check points to at least one on every highway, from one region to the other and that only experience officers should be dispatched to man them.
This, Mr Boakye said, would help restore confidence, trust, discipline and respect that existed between the police and drivers as well as passengers. He said police at checks points must be made to be serious on duty instead of concentrating on pettiness.
