Drivers cautioned to be careful during harmattan period

Accra, Jan.3, GNA – Drivers have been cautioned to be careful especially at dawn with the onset of this year’s harmattan season which comes with poor visibility. They are also to be especially careful in hilly areas where the effect of the season would be most drastic.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Amos Narh, Senior Meteorologist at the Kotoka International Airport; said the harmattan season would last till early February. He said humidity level was around 19 per cent compared to nine per cent during other harmattan seasons, adding that while the season lasted, there would be periods of much less dryness called the relaxation in between long periods of dry weather. Mr Narh explained that the season, which was a result of the presence of a sub-tropical high pressure over North Africa, got drier when the pressure was intensified and less dry when the pressure subsided. He said as a result of the interplay of weather systems there was the possibility of rainfall during the season. He said the nights were particularly cold with temperatures ranging from 18 degrees Celsius to 11.9 degree Celsius.

Mr Narh cautioned the public to wear protective clothing at night in order to protect themselves against cold related illness. He also urged the public especially farmers and hunters against habits such as bush burning and any other form of behaviour that could lead to fire outbreaks.
