A combination of disregard for traffic regulations and over-zealousness on the part of a police officer guarding a bullion van led to the gruesome death of a commercial (trotro) driver last Friday on the Teshie-Nungua road.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred when the trotro driver attempted to drive ahead the van at the second estate Junction. He allegedly drove into the lane of the Bullion Van.
Attempts to correct the driver during the peak trotro sales time, led to exchange of words. The policeman it is alleged fired three rounds of ammunition at the driver killing him instantly.
The police at Teshie confirmed the story but were not in a position to comment because they claim they are not through with their investigations and that the docket on the case had been forwarded to the National Headquarters.
National Headquarters however informed the Network Herald that it was rather the regional police command that was attending to the issue. According to a driver colleague, all the vehicles drove onto the shoulders of the road to make way for the van when they heard the siren of the escort of the van but all of a sudden they saw the trotro driver move onto the road.
The driver who did not want his identity revealed explained that all they heard were shots from the direction of the van and then the trotro swayed, veered off the road and crashed into an electricity pole.
He continued that it was when they went to check on the driver that they realized that the fired bullets went through the back of the trotro straight into the head of its driver killing him instantly.
The drivers mate, the only occupant in the trotro was said to have jumped out of the moving trotro before the crash occurred. The only things left at the scene were relics of the accident made up of the slippers of the mate, broken windscreens and blood
