Driver remanded over drugs

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA – A 30-year-old driver, Salasi Danko, arrested with 14 parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Danko pleaded not guilty to possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority and the court remanded him into Police custody to re-appear on August 13.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Aidan Dery told the court that on June 11, this year, at about 1630 hours personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service were on their routine duties on the Accra-Ho Road.

He said on reaching Kpong, the team erected a road barrier to check speeding drivers and other illegal activities, during which a Hyundai passenger bus pulled up and during a search; the Police intercepted a black travelling bag and a fertilizer bag.

When the bags were opened in the presence of the accused, each contained seven parcels of brown cellotaped substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Danko was therefore handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department at Accra for further investigations, and in his caution statement, he said the bags were given to him by someone at Fintey to be given to another person at the Motorway roundabout for GH¢400.
