Driver jailed four years for robbing German tourists

Cape Coast, Jan. 17, GNA-A 22-year old driver who trailed and later robbed two German tourists in their hotel room at Ampenyi in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) district of the Central Region, was on Wednesday sentenced to four years imprisonment in hard labour by a circuit court at Cape Coast.

Simon Kofi, 22 pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing and was convicted on his own plea when he appeared before the court, presided over by Mr Beresford Acquah.

Chief inspector Augustine Amonoo who gave the facts of the case said Kofi who hails from Ampenyi, was a former employee of the Kosa Beach Resort in the town where the tourists, whose names were given as Theresa and Helga were lodging.

He said on January 13 this year the two left their room for town and on their return detected that their window had been broken and a digital camera, a camera stand, one mobile phone and a cash of 100 euros and 320,000 cedis were missing.

Chief inspector Amonoo said, the tourists reported the matter to the caretaker of the resort who in turn engaged the assistance of the youth of the town to investigate and apprehend the culprit. He said the youth group suspected Kofi and therefore mounted a search for him and later saw him hiding in a bush but on seeing them, he took to his heels.

The prosecutor said he was given a hot chase, arrested and handed over to the police who later retrieved the items except the phone and the monies from him. He told the police during investigations that he hid at the Resort and trailed the women until they left their room and carried out his plan.
