Driver jailed for stealing and attempting suicide

Nkawie (Ash), Oct 7, GNA – The Atwima District Court sentenced a 23-year-old driver who stole a sheep and attempted to commit suicide while in police cell has to 36 months imprisonment.

Kwame Peter, the driver, pleaded guilty.

Police Inspector Ben Antwi told the court that on 4th September this year, the accused went to Gyankobaa near Nkawie with his taxi and stole six sheep from the pen of one Atta Kofi.

He said when the suspect was about to put the animals in the boot of the taxi and realised that some people spotted him he abandoned the animals and drove off.

Insp. Antwi said about an hour later the accused drove to Nkawie-Panin where he stole sheep from one Ali Mohammed’s pen but he was arrested and handed over to the Nkawie police.

He said while the accused was in police cell pending investigations he tore part of the blanket on which he slept and attempted hanged himself with it.

Insp. Antwi said the officer heard an unusual sound coming from the cell and when he verified he saw the accused hanging. The police officer untied the node from the convict’s neck and took him to the Nkawie Government Hospital.
