Driver jailed for invoking curses on police officer

A Kumasi circuit court presided over by D. P.W. Armediour has sentenced a 30-year-old driver to one month’s imprisonment in hard labour for attempting to invoke a curse on a police officer.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of GH¢300 or in default serve three months’ incarceration.

Aboagye Kwabena created a weird scene at the Trede portion of the Kumasi-Obuasi highway in the Atwima Kwanwoma District after he threatened to curse a police officer attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the police service with eggs and other items.

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty on a charge of use of motor vehicle with a deflated tyre contrary to section RTR 62 of LI 2180 0f 2012.

According to Aboagye, he had no intention of casting a spell on the security officer but only brandished the eggs to frighten him to release his driver’s license to him.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, prosecution led by Chief Inspector Adjei Foster said on April 19, 2013 at about 7:40am, the convict who was driving a 207 Mercedes Benz bus with registration number GE 1714 V was arrested by the police.

He said the police stopped the driver when they detected that one of the tyres of the vehicle had deflated.

Aboagye’s license was taken from him and ordered to replace the faulty tyre.

The convict took offence and abandoned the vehicle at an unauthorized place, leaving the passengers to their fate.

A few minutes later, he returned with an earthen ware containing nine eggs, a license cover and a plastic bottle believed to be containing concoction and threatened to rain curses on the arresting officer if he failed to return his driver’s license.

The convict escaped when the police attempted to arrest him but turned up the next day at the Ashanti Regional Police headquarters in the company of the vehicle owner.

He was arrested and charged with the offence.
