Foster Owusu, a driver, charged with “negligently causing harm, careless and inconsiderate driving”, has been sentenced to a fine of 600 Ghana Cedis, by a circuit court at Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region.
The court presided over by Mr. Yaw Atta Sampong ordered further that Owusu should pay a total of 300 Ghana Cedis to compensate Owusu’s two victims. He admitted the offences. Failure to pay the fine and compensation, Owusu will go to prison for two years.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Patience Nyame Darko told the court that Owusu was driving Toyota Avenis, a private car, with registration number GS 5396-11, with two persons including Madam Dzifa Adorbla, a victim, while Mr. Collins Offei was also driving Kia Bongo truck with registration number GS 567-11.
The prosecutor said on November 25, last year at about 12:45 hours the convict, Owusu, was driving from Accra to Akim Oda, but drove carelessly when he reached Akim Bantama and as a result, veered off his lane and ran into Mr. Offei’s Bongo truck, leading to an accident.
Chief Inspector Patience stressed that in the accident, Madam Adorbla and Mr. Offei sustained various degrees of injuries and they were rushed to the Akim Oda Government Hospital, but were later referred to the Saint Joseph’s Hospital at Koforidua further treatment. Owusu was later arrested.
