Driver Charged With Stealing Mails

Accra, (Greater Accra) AUG. 3, –

Alhassan Adam, a tractor driver working with African Ground Operation (AFGO) at the Kotoka International Airport today appeared before an Accra circuit tribunal charged with stealing mails belonging to Ghana Postal Company. Adam, also charged with causing damage and a threat to kill, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to reappear on August five. Deputy Superintendent of Police Elizabeth Allando told the tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Adderson Yeboah, that following reports of theft of mails at the Airport, security was tightened and the police alerted. On July 15, this year, at about 11.30 p.m. the accused, was seen by a fellow worker driving away with of the one of the mail bags. While opening the letters, a colleague saw him but accused warned him to keep quiet or lose his life. According to the prosecution, the colleague fearing for his life did not inform the authorities. When the theft was discovered by the authorities, a number of staff at the Airport Post Office including the accused and the colleague who saw him were arrested. The prosecution said it was during police interrogation that the colleague mentioned the accused who later took the police to a spot where a number of opened letters were retrieved.
