Sunyani (B/A), April 9, GNA- About 500 delegates of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) are expected to converge at the Arts Centre in Accra on April 26 to hold the party’s maiden national delegates congress to elect a flag-bearer.
Mr Mohammed Salisu Sulemana, Deputy General Secretary of the party disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Tuesday.
He said so far only Mr T.N. Ward-Brew, an Accra based legal practitioner had filed his nomination form to contest for the flag-bearership.
“We are waiting for others interested to come forward” Mr Sulemana added.
The Deputy General Secretary emphasized that the congress would help create awareness among the general public about the party’s activities.
“It is important to go for congress as a registered political party to expose and strengthen the party to participate fully in the country’s elections”, Mr. Sulemana added.
He explained that the delay of the party’s congress was due to the inability of the national executive committee of the party to finish on time the reconstituting and re-organizing of the party’s constituency membership.
All necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a successful congress at which the party would outdoor its national and regional executives as well as parliamentary candidates, he added. Mr Sulemana said “if things remained as they were”, the delegates would test Mr Ward-Brew at the congress on his ability to become the flag-bearer.
He appealed to all national, regional and constituency executives to attend the congress and support the party.
