DOVVSU rescue girl, 15 from being married off to an older man

The Madina Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service have rescued a 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) graduate from being married off to an older man and then sent to Niger.

The girl, whose name is not unknown, was arranged to be made a second wife in a three-day ceremony which started from Saturday.

Madina DOVVSU commander ASP Christine Srofenyoh told Joy News they received the information from an informant and rescued the girl Saturday.

The girl is currently with DOVVSU, she said and added that, the police “will be going for the father and the supposed husband.”

ASP Srofenyoh, “Our information is that after the marriage he will be taken the girl to Niger.”

She said the girl has completed JHS and because of the marriage, “she has not been allowed to go to SHS.”

Meanwhile the Social Welfare Department said it will provide accommodation for the rescued girl.
