Dormaa fire office educates on bushfires

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), March 4, GNA=96The Dormaa Municipal Fire Office has intensified public education on domestic and bushfires in the two Dormaa Districts.

The campaign, which will last during the entire harmattan, has been in the form of radio talk shows and regular visits by the fire staff to fire-prone communities in the district. The Dormaa Municipal Fire officer, Mr Atta Ameyaw, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Dormaa-Ahenkro that his office had liaised with fire offices in all districts sharing common boundaries with Dormaa to ensure total absence of bushfires.

He warned and advised potential fire starters to respect the ban on bush-burning or be ready to face the full rigours of the law. As regards an early torrential rain in the area on February 26, 2011, the Municipal Fire Officer described it as a healthy sign and favourable in the fight against wild fires. He, however, cautioned that the heavy rain had neither come to revoke the ban on bush burning nor had it granted anyone the licence to engage in any act that could expose life and property to fire disasters.

On domestic fires, the Deputy Dormaa Municipal Fire Officer, Joseph Martins urged the public to refrain from illegal electricity connections and always ensure that power to their homes and rooms was connected by professionals.

Mr. Martins, who educates the public on domestic fires every morning on the Dormaa Community Radio also impressed upon the public to handle liquefied petroleum gas with utmost care. He advised users to keep their burners at least three yards away from the gas cylinders and also to ensure the burners were not leaking.
