Akosombo, July 17, GNA – Mrs Juliana Ayeh-Gyampoh, Asuogyaman District Director of Education, has advised parents not to sacrifice education on the “altar of poverty” but to show concern for the steady development of their children.
She was speaking at the annual speech and prize-giving day of the Akosombo VRA JSS number one at the weekend.
Mrs Ayeh-Gyampoh said that even without the government announcement absorbing school fees and other things to promote education children who should be in school stay at home and “loaned out” as farm hands and for other economic activities.
She said the practise was prevalent in the area, and noted that the laws of the land would deal with recalcitrant parents. Mrs Ayeh-Gyampoh said a nation with a better-trained human resource would develop at a faster rate and charged the stakeholders to put their shoulders under the wheel of progress to meet the fast changing technological world.
Mr Francis K. Darkey, Headmaster, said the school retained its fourth position out of 31 institutions and announced that out of the 600 pupils presented for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) two had between aggregate six and 10, 40 obtained between 11 to 20 while 37 got between 21-31.
He said that two teachers from the school had been nominated for this year’s best teachers award.
Mr. Darkey appealed to teachers, parents and stakeholders not to impose subjects and careers on children but to allow them to freely choose areas they could do better.
He charged parents and guardians to join Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and urged community involvement in school administration to ensure the success of institutions.
Miss Millicent G. Bruce, Head Technical/Vocational Department, had earlier led parents and invited guest to witness an exhibition of the handiwork of their pupils and wards.
The MP for the area, Mr Kofi Osei-Anoryaw presented books on various subject to the school. 17 July 05
