Pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has stated it will not relent in its quest to ensure credible polls in the future in spite of a successful 2016 election.
According to the group, the Electoral Commission (EC) must not go to sleep after this year’s election but continue to work and institute important reforms to improve on the efficiency of the electioneering process.
Group convener David Asante, who made this call in his address at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, December 14, indicated that the LMVCA would continue to campaign for a credible election in 2020.
According to Mr Asante, the Electoral Commission (EC) still has important work to do because a voter turnout of 68 per cent, as reported by the commission, means over 5 million people did not vote on Election Day.
For them, the development needs to be probed and solutions implemented to reduce the huge number in subsequent elections.
The group, however, lauded citizens, the EC, and all stakeholders involved in the election for their roles in the just-ended polls. He said the efforts by these people ensured that “Ghana emerged as a shining beacon of democracy after the process”.
The group was one of the organisations which campaigned against the use of the voters’ register for the 2016 elections, claiming it was bloated.
