Sekondi March 26, GNA – The Reverend Winfred Azornu, Kwesimintsim Sub-District Pastor of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, on Saturday said it would be morally wrong for the government to legalise prostitution to derive tax from the trade.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi, he said, “It would be uncalled for the government to come out with policies to legalise prostitution on tax considerations”.
Rev Azornu said the school dropout rate among girls would increase because many of them would think prostitution was a quick way of making money.
It would also lead to an increase in criminal activities and moral decadence while the society would become more corrupt.
Rev Azornu said legalisation of commercial sex would also retard the efforts of some non-governmental organisations trying to rehabilitate prostitutes some of whom were infected with HIV/AIDS.
He said the government would have to use scarce resources to cater for People Living With HIV/AIDS.
Rev Azornu pointed out that Christianity considered pre-marital sex as a sin and said Christians should try to instil moral uprightness and discipline in the people.
