Atik Mohammed has called on the government to clamp down on vigilante groups in the country to safeguard Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, the General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) expressed worry over the culture where political party functionaries, particularly the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), attempt to justify the existence of the vigilante groups.
Atik Mohammed was commenting on the recent attacks by the “Delta Force”, a vigilante group affiliated with the NPP.
“If there’s any threat to our nation’s democracy, it’s this vigilantism that is going on,” he stated.
Condemning the formation of vigilante groups, Atik urged President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government to take action against the “Delta Force” and any other vigilante group.
To him, the President should not only be angered and keep lamenting about their behaviour but put measures in place to check them.
“As for political leadership, you have no shares in this enterprise of anger and lamentation. Yours is to take action. When something happens, you have the right to be angry but your response to the issue should not be that I’m angry . . . We wanted to see immediately some action going on for us to know that indeed this is a fast response government,” he told the President.
