Don’t ignore issues affecting women-Lawyer

Takoradi, March 10 -GNA -Mrs Yaa Agyeman Boadi, a Senior Legal Officer said issues affecting women should not be ignored by society. She said many women have had their rights deprived due to apathy and a general disregard for women’s issues.

Mrs Boadi, who is also the Western Regional Coordinator of the Women in Law and Development (Wildaf) and Legal Awareness Programme (LAP) said these at a days’ forum to mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday at Takoradi.

She said the celebration of the International Women’s day, is meant to expose some of the challenges that women face in their respective professions, at home and find appropriate solutions to them through education, information sharing and emulation.

She said several women and girls are deprived of their rights when engaged in forced labour, virtually sold or given out as house helps or forced to perform certain traditional and outdated cultural practices. Mr. Justice Blay a Community Development Officer of Wildaf said the day has been set aside to celebrate women achievers.

He said several women had excelled in their various professions and trades but had not been recognised by the larger society.

Mr. Blay said there was the need to sensitise more women on their rights and international protocols that concern them. Copies of the children art book, which was compiled from a pictorial competition on “Violence against women through the eyes of the child” were presented to the participating schools.

The schools include the Bishop Essuah Catholic, Bethel Methodist, New Snaps, Cobba Yalley Primary and Junior Secondary Schools. The others were Fijai and Takoradi Secondary Schools.
