Don’t go to Togo on Saturday – Ghana Immigration Service warns

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has warned Ghanaians against travelling to neighbouring Togo on Saturday August 26.

The move is to forestall any possible harm that may befall Ghanaians who may travel to the former French colony following the political agitations there in recent times.

According to the GIS, intelligence reports suggest that the opposition parties in the country are mobilising their base for another protest against the government on Saturday.

Opposition forces in Togo are demanding an end to the Gnassingbe family dynasty which has governed the country for the past 50 years.

Speaking to Starr Today Thursday, the PRO for the GIS Michael Amoako Atta said the various security agencies are monitoring the development to ensure that Ghanaians do not suffer any spill over effect.

“ We are cautioning those who intend traveling to the country to be cautious of their movement on Saturday. It is expected that the crowd may mobilise again, and so we are urging Ghanaians to be careful about their trips there and possibly put it on hold until the agitations are over,” he said.

Two protesters were killed, and 12 gendarmes were wounded in Sokode, 338km north of the capital, Lome, when security forces opened fire to break up demonstrations, the security ministry said on Saturday.

Tikpi Atchadam, Togo’s opposition leader and president of the PNP party, put the death toll at seven on Saturday night.
