Don’t be deceived by free SHS promise – Wechaiu Chief

The Chief of Wechaiu in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region, Naa Imoro Gumah II has waded into the free senior high school education controversy which is currently a subject of debate between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the Chief, free SHS education is not achievable now. He has therefore asked Ghanaians not to be deceived by that promise by the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo Addo.

Speaking during a courtesy call on him by President John Mahama at the start of his campaign in the region, the Chief called on his people and all citizens to rather consider quality education.

“…It’s not easy to make education free…education can never be free,” he stated.

He proposed that funds and other resources to be used to provide free education rather be channeled to build more infrastructure in all communities.

Naa Imoro Gumah II also praised the government for the numerous developments his vicinity has seen over the last three to four years.

President Mahama, on his part, told the chief and his people the development they’ve enjoyed so far are “just a tip of an iceberg”. He said they should prepare for more when the NDC gets the nod to lead the country again.
