Apam, (C/R), June 10, GNA – Doctors and nurses in Government and Mission Hospitals in the Central Region, have reaffirmed their commitment to reduce maternal mortality rate in the area to the barest minimum.
To achieve this objective, the medical officers and their lieutenants have made it their motto to ensure that every pregnant woman who enters any of their health facilities alive goes back home alive and healthier. Dr. Charles Ntiamoah Takyi, Medical Suerintendent of Apam Catholic Mission Hospital and leader of the Central Region Task Force on Maternal Mortality, gave the assurance when speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Maternal Mortality issue at Apam on Wednesday.
Dr. Takyi said the Regional Task Force on Maternal Mortality, which was the brain child of the Regional Director of Health Services (HS), Dr Arron Offei, had already put in place several workable interventions to assist in attaining the set goals. These include, training in reproductive – acquisition of knowledge and skills, monitoring and supervision of trainees, development of monitoring tools, and monitoring and supervision of reproductive health activities among others.
Dr. Takyi announced plans to intensify awareness creation activities in the rural communities through health officials in those areas.
The purpose is to drum home to husbands the need to impress upon their pregnant wives to report at least, three times to the nearest health facility during her nine months period for proper medical care to avoid complications during the delivery. Husbands, Dr Takyi further counselled, must also learn to accompany their expectant wives to hospitals and health centres when their time was due to deliver. This would help reduce the ordeal the women go through during such periods and inspire them to deliver early and safely.
