Doctor appeals for resolution of salary disparity

Sunyani (B/A) May 04, GNA – Dr. Daniel Asare, Medical Superintendent at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani has appealed to the government to resolve the current salary disparity agitated by Health Service Workers Union as existing between its members and doctors to bring normalcy in the health sector. Dr. Asare, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon who made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency about an strike action by members of the Union pointed out that the problem had gone on “for far too long”.

He denied that doctors at the hospital had embarked on a strike action nor was any of them planning to do so as being speculated, adding, the hospital’s management had met with the rank and file of the basic units of the hospital to deliberate on how best to handle the situation should.

“Provisions have already been made to supplement any shortfall caused by the national service personnel, casual workers and those employed under the national youth employment programme”, he said. Dr Asare added that with the exception of the Out-Patient-Department (OPD), which would not be in service, all the other departments including OPD for children, child emergency, dental clinic, ENT, surgical, accident, delivery obstetrics, emergency as well as antiretroviral therapy would be in full session, and that there was no cause for alarm.

As at the time GNA was leaving the hospital premises, all the doctors were at a meeting, following one held by the nurses.
