Accra, Nov. 12. GNA – The delicate blend of formal and informal education has led to cultures becoming global in nature. It is therefore important to expose the youth to informal education as well because it is the foundation upon which formal education rests, Major (Rtd) Courage Quashigah, Minister of Health said in Accra at the weekend.
Speaking at the 80th Speech and Prize-Giving Day of Achimota School, he said the main objective of education was to secure the survival and perpetual existence and development of a society through the transfer of values, customs and tradition from one generation to the next through inventions and innovations.
Mrs Beatrice Tsotso Adom, Headmistress of Achimota School, said although the school was highly respected, it had had its fair share of problems.
She mentioned massive encroachment on the school’s land, inadequate classroom space, lack of facilities at the school’s clinic, squatters and prayer camps on the school’s field and forest.
Mrs Adom said with the assistance of the Ghana Education Service, the Parent-Teacher Association, Old Achimotans Association and some internally generated funds, the school buildings had been kept in a good shape.
She applauded the 100 per cent score of the school in the last WASSCE results and attributed the success to the hard work and the dedication of the teaching staff.
Mr Patrick Awuah, Founder of Ashesi University, advised the students to take their studies seriously since the transformation of the nation in particular and Africa as a whole rested on their shoulders. He urged the students not to discriminate against any race or culture but be prepared to learn from anyone who had something good to offer.
Mr Awuah urged the students to take pride in the school since it had produced people had played significant roles in the development of the nation.
The Robert Kwami Scholar award was given to Selassie Tetedjie for being the overall best science student while the Dr. Henrietta Asare awards were given to Janine Vowotor and Edinam Yawa Agude of SS1 and SS2 respectively.
The Old Achimotan Association best student award went to Geraldine Rose Adetola, the best OAA teacher’s award went to Samuel Asamoah while and Ms Francesca Anomanyo won the best OAA worker’s award.
