Kumasi, June 3, GNA – The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has warned the citizenry not to blame evil spirits for the increasing spate of road accidents in the country but endeavour to research and find solutions to the root cause of such occurrences. The Commission said since most of the accidents were human error-related, it behoved the citizenry and stakeholders in the transport industry to campaign against reckless driving and other indiscipline acts on the road.
Mr. Johnson Aboagye, Chairman of the NRSC, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Friday indicated the need for the citizenry, especially passengers to report reckless drivers to the appropriate authorities for prompt action in order to ensure safety on the road.
“It is wrong for the citizenry to assume that enforcing motor traffic regulations was the sole prerogative of the police”, he said. Mr Aboagye pointed out that in view of the dangers incessant accidents posed to the nation’s socio-economic development, NRSC, in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) had stepped up road safety campaigns to save precious lives. The NRSC Chairman also called for the institution of proactive measures that would ensure that the sale of alcoholic beverages at lorry stations was banned so as to reduce the incidence of drunk driving.
He appealed to personnel of the MTTU to strive not to compromise on their responsibilities but enforce motor traffic regulations to the letter so as to bring to book indisciplined drivers.
