Do more to aid students make the right career choices

Madam Josephine Pokoo-Aikins, National Director, Guidance and Counseling Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), says students should be aided to make the right career choices.

She said it was important to recognize that “the subjects they choose to study will dictate the work they will do later” and that was why they should be guided.

Madam Pokoo-Aikins was speaking at a forum organized by the Ashanti Regional Association of Guidance and Counseling Coordinators in Kumasi as part of its annual week celebration.

It brought together teachers, students, parents, chiefs, religious and opinion leaders.

This year’s event was held on the theme “Guidance and counseling: An essential tool for building a complete individual”.

The director said a major benefit of good education was to help individuals to contribute to the development and improvement of themselves, community and the nation.

Everything should therefore be done to ensure that students kept to the path that would lead to exactly that.

Madam Pokoo-Aikins noted that globalization had come with some challenges as the youth shifted from treasured traditional values and engaged in all manner of social evils including drugs addiction, occultism and robbery.

The Guidance and Counseling Coordinators would have to step up their efforts to give protection to the young people.

The Regional Education Director, Mr. J. K. Onyinah, called for the strengthening of guidance and counseling in schools.
