Dixcove appeals for sea defence wall to stop fast erosion at shore

Dixcove (W/R), Sept. 21, GNA – Otumfuo Kwesi Ageyman IX, the Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, has appealed to the government to build a sea defence wall for the town. He said tidal waves had consumed very important structures including residential and school buildings, churches and markets that were far away from the sea.

Otumfuo Kwesi Ageyman expressed worry that the delay in responding to the call could render the town and its environs a disaster area. He said this at a durbar of the chiefs and people Lower Dixcove to climax the Anluwa Kundum festival at Dixcove. Commending the government for providing the area with electricity, he appealed for equipping the schools with computers and accessories. He said lack of technological knowledge had rendered most of the youth in the area unskilled therefore becoming labourers. Regrettably, Otumfuo Kwesi Ageyman said, the farmlands that should open up jobs for the youth in agriculture had also been sold to large plantation companies while others had also acquired part of the land left for exploration and mining activities. “As a result it is difficult for the determined youth who want to venture into agriculture to acquire land.” Otumfuo Kwesi Agyeman said “the area can be counted among places with high rate of poverty to merit the attention as those in that bracket”.

In a speech read for him the District Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Mr Jones Amoah, said the area was beset with challenges and called on all to cooperate with the assembly to tackle its development programmes. Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado chaired the occasion and appealed to the people to unite and support the traditional authorities to champion the course of the area with a common purpose.
