District Assemblies should build capacities of their members to perform

Breman Asikuma (C/R) Aug. 28, GNA- Dr Ato Essuman, a Council of State member, has suggested to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to put in place capacity building training programmes for their assembly members.

According to him, if members become more knowledgeable, they would contribute meaningfully at Assembly meetings and perform well in their electoral areas. Dr. Essuman made the suggestion at the second ordinary meeting of the 1st session of the 6th Assembly of Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa(AOB) district on Friday. He said the achievement of an Assembly 93stands on the performance” of its members.

Dr Essuman said the 93National Cake” cannot take care of all the needs of the people and therefore asked Assembly members to identify areas to improve on the generation of internal fund. “This could be done when the members are trained to broaden their horizon on income generating ventures of others. On politics of insults, Dr Essuman condemned the practice and urged those involved to desist from that if they wish to become good politicians. “Insults and acrimony would not help deepen the country’s democratic dispensation”. Dr Essuman later presented a cheque for 1,000.00 Cedis to the Assembly as seed money for an education endowment fund to carter for brilliant but needy students in the area. He also donated quantities of reading books to the district library as his contribution towards the promotion of education in the area.

Madam Georgina Nkrumah Aboah, AOB district Chief Executive, said the district’s performance in the 2011 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results improved from 51.97 in 2010 to 63.89 per cent. She said 9 public and 7 private schools in the area had hundred per cent pass as against to 12 schools in 2010.
