District assemblies are not gold mines

Obuasi, Sept. 18, GNA – Mr Emmanuel Kojo Fordjour, a former assembly member of the recently dissolved Obuasi Municipal Assembly has said it is erroneous for people to think that the assemblies are places for amassing wealth.

Mr Fordjour, who was reacting to a question posed to him during the mounting of platform at his Amangoase Electoral Area, pointed out that the assemblies’ job was purely sacrificial and devotion to serve one’s community and not an avenue to get rich.

Mr Daniel A. Mohammed, the questioner, had wanted to know why Mr Fordjour was seeking for a re-election, after having said earlier “there was nothing for an assemblyman to gain at the assembly”. Mr Fordjour is contesting with two other candidates namely Nana John Brian Odoom, an old assemblyman and Miss Sabina Agyei, a new entrant to the local politics.

“The assembly job has no attractive cash remuneration, it is a sacrificial work”, he stressed.

In response to another question, Mr Fordjour said his concern for the development of the Obuasi municipality was not restricted to his electoral area alone, since he championed the extension of electricity to Grusa Akura in another electoral area.

He said his tenure of office brought a number of development projects to the area, which included the construction of a traffic light, the completion of a 20-seater toilet, rehabilitation work on the road from Koffiekrom to Camara Dini area and the extension of streetlights to Amangoase and BIdieso.

Mr Fordjour appealed to the electorate for their votes to enable him to continue with his development agenda for the area. Nana Odoom on his part, asked the people to judge him by his performance when he was the assemblyman and vote for him. Miss Sabina Agyei, the aspiring assemblywoman told the people she would collaborate with the unit committee of the area to bring development to the area.

Mr Kofi Dartey, the Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission, who supervised the mounting of the platform, advised them to vote correctly by thumb printing at the appropriate places.
