Distance learning, critical for development – Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has observed that distance learning courses ought to be given a priority in the academic programmes of tertiary educational institutions.

This, he said, was the only way the nation could create the requisite opportunities for the growing student population to have access to higher education.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu noted that distance learning via Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) was critical to equipping the youth with the relevant expertise for a vibrant human resource base.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf in Kumasi at the maiden graduation ceremony of the Jackson Educational Complex (JEC).

A total of 178 students were awarded Basic Education Diploma certificates after three years of studies through distance learning.

The JEC, an affiliate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), is a project of Professor and Mrs. Jackson, two renowned experienced educationists, and aims at churning out well-resourced tutors for quality education delivery.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu lauded the Jacksons for their vision and hoped the school would strive for excellence in its programmes.

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, indicated that the authorities would ensure a strict monitoring of all programmes of the JEC for the mutual benefit of the two institutions.
