Disruption in power affects water supply to westernAccra

Accra, Dec. 9, GNA – The Management of Aqua Vitens Rand Ltd (AVRL) on Thursday said the current erratic water supply to customers in the western parts of Accra served by the Weija Treatment Plant had been caused primarily by disruptions to power supply.

It said in addition, one of their booster stations located at Sowutuom had a fault that was being rectified.

A statement issued by Mr Stanley Martey, Communications Manager, said the worst affected areas include Achimota, Sowutuom, Dome, Taifa, Santa Maria, Quarshieman, Gbawe, Christian Village, Dome Pillar Two, Haatso, Madina and Alhaji.

“We have been duly informed by the management of ECG that they are currently carrying out substantial works on their infrastructure to improve power supply,” it said. The statement explained that water supply was heavily dependent on power and that even a five-minute interruption could destabilise water services by 12 to 24 hours.

“The more frequent the power outages the more the water situation is compounded,” it said.

The statement said management of ECG could not improve power supply substantially without inconveniencing its customers, including AVRL and GWCL.

“We are therefore asking our customers for their understanding. Should the situation become critical, special emergency services would be organised for critical institutions such as hospitals and schools,” it said.
