Display of ‘magic’ at Asantehemaa’s burial rites

There was open display of magic by priests from various shrines in the Kumasi Metropolis at the weeklong burial rites of the Asantehemaa Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem II at the Manhyia Palace.

Priests locally called ‘Akomfuo’ in different attire showed their magical prowess by performing some magic to the admiration of some people who visited the palace to commiserate with the Asante king Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Some were spotted wearing smock with grown rasta hair, holding their horse tails, holding birds, others had in their palms powder, cutlasses, sticks among others. Some of them were bare chested and others clad in clothe with powder spread thinly on them.

Ultimatefmonline.com spotted some of them turning stones into yam, sharing monies, making baskets walk, changing eggs into different items, whereas others were seen tossing knives and putting fire in their mouths.

Some of the priests both young and old were spotted riding horses in front of the palace.

The priests were mobbed by some of the crowd who wanted to experience the magical performances.

As tradition demands, some of the Manhyia executioners wore gun powder on their faces holding sharp hammers and knives.

Some of them performed rituals amidst tradition songs and words best interpreted by them.

It is believed some of these priests came from Benin.
