Disaster Committee Cautions U/E To Conserve Food

Bolgatanga (Upper East), 30 Oct.,

The national disaster management organisation (NADMO) has advised families in the Upper East region to economise on the use of foodstuffs in view of the anticipated shortage next year. Mr. Naambuyi Dokurugu regional co-ordinator of NADMO who gave the advice, said the only way to avoid famine in view of this year’s poor harvest is to postpone all expensive funerals and festivals. He was addressing students of Bolgatanga technical institute and Bolgatanga girls secondary school after presenting prizes to students, who excelled in an essay competition on ”bushfires in Upper east region, what is to be done”. Mr. Dokurugu explained that the poor rainfall leading to a shortfall in food production is due to the indiscriminate bush- burning which has affected the climate in the area. Miss Angelina Awuni of Bolgatanga Girls and Miss Lydia Anongo of Bolgatanga Technical, who came first and third respectively were given dictionaries while Master Ernest Owusu of Bolga technical who came second received a calculator. The competition was organised as part of activities to mark the national disaster management week.
