Diabetics advised to eat local foods

Mrs Julian Dzansi, Senior Nursing Officer in -charge of the Diabetes Centre at the Ho District Hospital on Tuesday said local tubers and cereals eaten with vegetables were the best for diabetics.

Mrs Dzansi, who was discussing diabetes management with the Men’s Fellowship of Riis Presbyterian Church in Ho to mark the World Diabetes Day, also recommended a beans meal a day for everybody. This year’s day is being marked under the theme “Reducing the burden- Diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases”.

Mrs Dzansi said diabetes could be controlled or avoided by dieting and exercises and, therefore, urged people to avoid fats and to use little oil in their cooking. Topics discussed were definition, signs and symptoms, management and prevention of diabetes among other topics.

A film on the management of diabetes was also shown to participants. Mrs Dzansi said exercises strengthened the heart, induced sleep, increased circulation and promoted general well being.
