DFP cautions against political mayhem

Accra, Dec 3, GNA – The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) on Monday asked Ghanaians to be cautious of political parties threatening mayhem in the event that they lose the 2008 elections.

” Such statements are not only a threat to peace and security and undeserving of any person or group of persons seeking to govern this country, but have the tendency of whipping up unnecessary sentiments and passions ahead of elections”, a statement signed by Bede A. Ziedeng, Deputy General Secretary for DFP said on Monday.

According to the DFP, the Electoral Commission (EC) had organised four elections successfully since the inception of the fourth republic and there was therefore no basis for any contesting party to suggest ahead of the elections that the EC would not live up to its responsibilities.

” The DFP as a party abhors the use of violence, threats, insults and discrimination. It disassociates itself completely from any political party or group that intends to use other methods rather than laid down regulations in seeking redress”, the statement added. It said the party therefore maintained that political parties should be judged by the commitment they make to ensure peace and security in the country even in an electoral defeat.

” We hope all political parties would be guided by the need to protect the supreme interest of Ghana, which is the peace and security Ghanaians have enjoyed since the inception of the fourth Republic”, the statement said.
