Developers encroach Kansaweredo cemetery in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis

Some real estate developers have encroached upon the Kansaweredo cemetery in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.

The encroachers have demolished some tombs thereby exposing mortal remains.

A taskforce made up of the Environmental Health Directorate, Building Inspectorate Division of the Town and Country Department and city guards of the Metropolitan Assembly stormed the cemetery on Thursday to stop the encroachment.

Some of encroachers had already started laying foundation for their building projects without building permits from the Assembly.

Mr Sule Ahmed, Metropolitan Environmental Health Officer, told journalists at Kansaweredo in the Metropolis that two persons have been arrested.

He said exposure of tombs poses environmental hazard to residents and contravenes the Assembly’s bye-laws.

Mr Ahmed said a taskforce would be constituted to demolish the illegal structures.
